Augmentative and alternative communication devices are quite helpful in bridging gaps, but there is a learning curve

For those with communication deficits, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices are an excellent option that can help them connect.

And while all the available devices (ranging from simple to the highly complicated and technical) increase the options and improve outcomes for those with communicative needs, clear and effective communication isn’t something that comes instantly, regardless of the means being used.

This handout summarizes several of these devices and how therapists and patients can work through the adaptation process.
